Huawei’s Layout in the Medical Sector: 5G, Medical Devices and Cooperation with Hospitals

Huawei has always been at the forefront of public opinion, from the 90-day reprieve of U.S. Commerce Department on Huawei, to a public statement that “we’ll be fine without American chips” by Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei, to an open letter to the US media which attracted global attention.
In March 2019, sales of medical devices (Class II medical devices) were newly included in the business scope of Huawei Device Co., Ltd. In addition, Huawei, united with multiple Grade A tertiary hospitals, independently developed the TruSeen 3.0 precision heart monitoring system, which constitutes professional detection algorithm of arrhythmias, so as to reduce the probability of stroke and other adverse events. Meanwhile, Huawei also applies 5G technology to support continuous monitoring and sensory processing devices, and continuously collects real-time data of patient and record more information through medical IoT devices.
On March 16, 2019, China’s first remote surgery on a patient with Parkinson’s disease using 5G technology was successfully conducted at the Chinese PLA General Hospital (301 Hospital). Huawei and China mobiles cooperated to provide telecommunication support for the surgery, during which a “brain pacemaker” was implanted into this patient.
In the meantime, Huawei has made progresses in multiple directions during the exploration of Wireless X Labs. It is working with over 280 industry partners such as operators, hospitals, medical devices vendors, and has established more than 40 cooperative research projects.
With respect to the digital construction of hospitals, Huawei has served a large number of Grade A tertiary hospitals. For instance, Huawei has worked with West China Hospital, Sichuan University to build the big data integration and application platform, and participated in the planning and design of the top-level design of digital hospital of new campus of West China Second University Hospital. Besides, Huawei has also built a security system for Beijing Tongren Hospital, CMU, and helped the Chinese PLA General Hospital, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital and other hospitals establish data centers with high integration and easy to maintain, thus facilitating the intelligent construction of hospitals.
Since its launch in July 2017, “Huawei Cloud” has provided five major products, including medical imaging diagnostic solutions, biomedical solutions, medical care solutions of chronic disease, and telemedicine solutions. Currently, the specific research and development results of “Huawei Cloud” in the medical sector include DLI genomic sequencing solution, cloud-based AI analysis and solutions in pathological section of cervical cancer and other AI products.
On March 21, 2019, Huawei and Yitu published the Intelligent Healthcare Cloud Based on the Huawei’s full-stack hybrid cloud and big data platform and Yitu Medical’s image recognition, natural language processing, and speech processing technologies, along with the deep integration of “big data, AI, and cloud”, the Intelligent Medical Cloud transforms various medical database into a formatted and analysable one. Thanks to the sharing and accessibility brought by the cloud technology, it promotes the implementation of AI product matrix covering all clinical links in medical treatment, and contributes to the development of basic medical institutions in China.
It’s very interesting that in the past Mindray was considered “Huawei” in the medical devices industry, while today, Huawei itself has achieved ground-breaking breakthroughs and reaped abundant fruits in medical sectors.
